Al Azhar Temple #195 Mission Statement for Shriners as Mentors:
Shriners as Mentors will target at risk youth at the grade school level, primarily starting at 4th and 5th grade levels. Our objectives are to improve social skills, behavior, education, empowerment and widen horizons. Shriners as Mentors will teach the youth the importance of a solid education and instill moral values that will influence the character of our future generation.
Since the program started in 2005, the Nobles/Mentors of Al Azhar Temple #195 have done extensive work with our
program and has worked with over 200 Mentees in the local elementary schools in the city of Huntsville promoting academic excellence among at-risk students. Some of these efforts include weekly visits to the schools to provide tutoring sessions with the mentees, meeting with teachers to discuss behavior and academic progress, providing counsel to the mentees on the many challenges that they will encounter in their everyday activities in and outside of the classrooms, and volunteering to support school activities.
The Nobles of Al Azhar Temple #195 also support various events for the Mentees for academic and behavior improvements which include taking Mentees to Alabama A&M University football games, Tennessee Valley Vipers Football games, having an Essay to Action Contest Recognition Awards for outstanding improvements, and end of school year class incentives functions for a successful year.
